HOW KYK DRUMS ARE MADE.

An authentic West African kyk drum is hand carved with plenty of elbow grease from a single log of wood.

Step 1 - The wood is selected and cut to size with a lot of muscle.

Step 2 - The shape begins to emerge with hours of work with axes & picks.

Step 3 - The centre is hollowed.

Step 4 - The shell is refined & scraped, completing structural work.

Step 5 - Exterior carvings, painting, sanding, detailing & treatments applied.

Step 6 - Finally the drum is skinned with hide, rings and rope.

Carving a quality kyk drum takes experience, skills, strength and patience.

HOW TO PLAY THE DRUM.

Kyk drum set is 12 and is been played by one person, the other instruments are: Katako, Santana, surmi, chaka-chaka etc.

PLAYING THE DRUM

The drum is been played with a local wooden stick (Gula)by the right hand, then left hand without a stick.

There's no manual for this, but every individual is using his/her brain to create patterns, concepts, beats.

All the drums has there own individual sounds that produces Melody that is pleasant to the ear, Alongside the other instruments.

Kyk drum attracts attention and it reminds people of the ancient tune, sounds and that feelings of our culture.

Y.collins is the Director 1 of Kyk RC-JALINGO and one of the proffesional song writer, composer, singer and drummer in the history of kyk.
