Our former National Chairman, Mr. (Sir) Isaac Nungala, once remarked that “Makossa dance is not for everyone.” His observation was not meant to discourage, but to highlight a simple truth: Makossa requires energy, flexibility, and body awareness.
And that is perfectly fine.
A healthy culture makes room for everyone. Not everyone will move with the same speed, body type, or flexibility whether one is lean, full-figured, or still learning coordination. What matters is not how perfectly we dance, but the spirit with which we engage.
Kyk Makossa invites us to:
1. Celebrate our heritage:- The drum connects us to our roots and reminds us where we come from.
2. Embrace fitness and expression:- It challenges us to be more active, more present in our bodies.
3. Respect diversity:- Some will dance, some will clap, some will cheer. All are part of the celebration.
Rather than seeing Makossa as a test, we can see it as an invitation: to move at your own pace, to enjoy the music, and to honor the culture together. The drum does not judge body shape or size. It only asks for joy, pride, and participation.
As Mr. Nungala’s words remind us, Makossa may not be for every body in the same way, but the spirit of Makossa is for everyone.
Sir said this at the Central body tella conference at CRC-N PHASE-2 JALINGO.
